Students Explore the Science of Resilience

18 June 2026

On Thursday 18 June, Paul Burgum, a lecturer from Durham University visited Westminster City School to deliver an engaging and thought-provoking talk on resilience to Year 12 Psychology students. Drawing on his research in Antarctica, Paul explored how resilience is shaped by three key factors: people, place, and the individual. He shared fascinating examples from his work in one of the world's most extreme environments, highlighting how these factors can influence a person's ability to adapt and thrive in challenging circumstances.

Paul also encouraged students to reflect on resilience in their own lives, offering practical insights into how they can develop strategies to overcome setbacks, manage challenges, and build personal resilience both academically and personally.

In addition to discussing his research, Paul provided students with a valuable insight into life at Durham University. He explained the structure of the Psychology BSc degree, outlining the range of topics studied and how the course develops over the three years of undergraduate study.

Students gained a greater understanding of both resilience as a psychological concept and the exciting opportunities available through studying psychology at university.
