Music

Westminster City School's Music Department is proud to offer a wide variety of opportunities – within and outside our School – to our young people.

Outside the classroom

Every day we run lunchtime and after-school extracurricular clubs. Highlights include our Choir (students who frequently attend are awarded a special choir badge), our orchestra and our wind bands. All enable our young people to take part in various performance opportunities throughout the year.

For those interested in music technology, there are possibilities outside of lessons to gain additional one-to-one support through our Music Club.

Our Music Department's practice rooms are also freely accessible, so students get to use studio equipment to make music and to improve their compositional and performance skills.

Learning an instrument

We encourage participation in our numerous ensemble groups by providing instrumental lessons in brass, strings and woodwind, as well as piano, guitar and drums.

In addition to the joy of learning an instrument, our students can choose to take their ABRSM and Trinity Grade examinations.

If you would like your child to sign up for music lessons - please send an email to the Head of Music at, g.chan@wcsch.com.

Inspiring Musical Futures

Our School’s innovative programme, Inspiring Musical Futures, aims to ensure every Year 7 student has access to a free instrument lesson each week.

If you wish to support our Inspiring Musical Futures programme, then please contact our Finance Office on: accountspayable@wcsch.com. Alternatively, current parents/carers can donate via ParentPay.

Connections

Our unique central London location, combined with our active Music Department, means we have connections with external organisations like Voces8, the English National Opera, The Musicians Company, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal College of Music and Inner Voices.

We walk closely with these leading organisations and performers to provide trips, workshops and other additional performance opportunities for our students, both at Palace Street and in venues across London.

In addition, our annual Foundation concert unites Westminster City School with other schools within our Foundation, providing a spectacular evening of music and performance.

Beyond our School

We are proud to offer a magnitude of reward and enrichment trips throughout the year. Last year, our GCSE students had the exciting opportunity to visit the West End to watch the award-winning production of My Neighbour Totoro. Our Chamber Choir performed at a range of prestigious venues, including New Scotland Yard and the Raffles Hotel, while our school band took to the stage at the Royal College of Nursing.

Some of our talented songwriters also took part in a workshop for BBC Songs of Praise, which was later broadcast on television. With so much more to come this year, it’s an exciting time to be part of our school community.
