Oxbridge Preparation with Emanuel School

9 June 2026

On Monday 8 June, a group of Year 12 students aspiring to apply to Oxford and/or Cambridge attended a special Oxbridge preparation event at Emanuel School.

The session was led by Access Fellow Dr Matthew Williams, who challenged students to embrace their curiosity, think critically and ask questions that others may not consider. Through a series of interactive activities and discussions, students explored how universities such as Oxford and Cambridge look beyond academic achievement to identify applicants who demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a genuine passion for their chosen subject.

In addition to developing their critical thinking skills, students also received guidance on the Oxbridge admissions process, including personal statements, admissions tests and interview preparation.

Reflecting on the experience, Year 12 student Jagroop said:

“I have benefitted greatly from Dr Williams’ insight into the Oxbridge application process. From breaking down common mistakes in personal statements to helping us think more broadly about interview questions, his expertise has given me greater confidence in how to become the strongest candidate possible. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to applying his advice to my own preparation.”

Year 12 student Louise also spoke positively about the session. She added:

“The visit to Emanuel School was extremely beneficial and gave me a much clearer understanding of how to approach interviews. The structure of the session kept everyone engaged, with opportunities to discuss ideas in groups and hear different perspectives from other students.

Listening to different viewpoints helped broaden my thinking and deepen my understanding of the topics we discussed. After the talk, I feel more confident about applying to Oxbridge and much more prepared for the interview process.”

Students were able to leave the event with useful information that will help them in preparing for their early university applications in the Autumn Term.
