Both students have been members of the London Youth Choir Inner Voices for a few years since their time at Westminster City School and were personally invited to perform at the event after the foundation came across the choir’s performances online. The Albies, named after Justice Albie Sachs, were created by George and Amal Clooney to shine a protective spotlight on brave individuals and groups around the world who dedicate their lives to justice.
The evening featured performances led by world-renowned artist John Legend, with Inner Voices joining him on stage for this amazing celebration attended by global figures from the worlds of film, politics, and human rights.
Reflecting on the experience, Temi, who is in his final year of Sixth Form at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, said:
“It was extremely thrilling and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. I felt really lucky to be chosen to do this. Seeing the reactions of the celebrities smiling at us while we sang was such a memorable moment.”
Chiedozie who is in Year 12 at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, described the performance as a special milestone after years of commitment singing in the choir. He added:
“I felt like I really accomplished something great. Having sung with my school choir for five years, getting to perform at an event of this importance made me proud. In fact, one of my favourite moments was during rehearsals when I was asked to stand at the front to lead everyone. Also, singing next to John Legend was unforgettable and a moment I will remember forever.”
Ed Watkins, Director of Inner Voices, praised both students for their dedication and professionalism. He commented, saying:
“Temi and Chiedozie are crucial members of the choir, helping to ensure we gave a performance that was both musically and presentational at the level the Clooney Foundation expected at this extraordinary event.”
Miss Chan, Head of Music at Westminster City School, expressed her pride in the students’ achievement:
“Both Temi and Chiedozie bring the skills they learn from Inner Voices to our chamber choir every rehearsal and concert. They are such experts in what they do, and it’s wonderful to see them mentoring our younger students, who look up to them and strive to be singers like them.”
This exceptional opportunity not only showcased their talent on a prominent stage but also reflected the dedication and passion for music that continues to flourish at Westminster City School from as early on as Year 7.
