Zain Wins Gold at International Jiu-Jitsu Championship

2 October 2025

Congratulations to Sixth Form student, Zain in Year 13 at Westminster City School, who achieved an incredible win at the Turin International Open 2025, IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship on Saturday 27 September. Zain won a gold medal, marking his first international gold and establishing himself as one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors in the UK and Europe.

Westminster City School caught up with Zain. Reflecting on the event, he said:

“I still haven’t fully processed everything that happened last weekend, but to be highlighted as one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors in Europe and the UK is something that I’m very happy and proud about. I’m especially proud because I have been able to successfully balance my Sixth Form studies and training, which was important to me.”

Zain has successfully balanced the demands of his academic work alongside training with determination and resilience. His mum, Miss Tobin, expressed her appreciation to staff at Westminster City School, saying:

“Thank you all so much for providing him with the support he has needed with balancing his schoolwork along with his training. We appreciate you all.”

Looking ahead, Zain hopes to pursue further education while continuing to train, with the long-term goal of becoming a professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete. He expressed how thankful he is to both his teachers at Westminster City School and his training for helping him to stay motivated and overcome challenges.

“I’m grateful for the safe space my form tutor created for me to share moments when I felt overwhelmed. My teachers have always been supportive and understanding regarding coursework, particularly around times when I had training days. My training has taught me the importance of resilience, never giving up, and working hard to improve, which are lessons I take with me into school every day.”

All at Westminster City School are very proud of Zain and wish him all the best with what’s ahead.
