STEM Afternoon at Imperial College London
Recently, twenty Year 12 students from Westminster City School had the exciting opportunity to visit Imperial College London, currently ranked as the number one university in Europe. The visit gave students an in-depth look at studying Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at university and the wide range of courses available at Imperial College London.
During the afternoon, students engaged with academic speakers, discussed their own interests, and learned about the skills needed to succeed in STEM subjects. Nessa Carey, who is a Visiting Professor at Imperial College, introduced students to the fascinating world of Epigenetics, while Claire Higgins, who is a Senior Lecturer, shared her research on hair loss in adult males, providing valuable insights into academic research and the day-to-day life of a scientist.
Students also had the chance to tour the university’s facilities, asking thoughtful and inquisitive questions throughout. In particular, Aseel S and Jayden L impressed staff with their curiosity and engagement during the sessions.
Reflecting on the trip, Year 12 student Aisha, said:
“I really enjoyed experiencing a university environment and seeing the kind of work being done at Imperial. Even though the trip wasn’t directly linked to the subjects I’m currently studying, it was valuable to see how different areas of STEM connect and the breadth of career opportunities available. Hearing from current students about their journeys was especially inspiring.
I’m studying Psychology, Sociology, and Ethics and hope to pursue midwifery in the future. While the visit didn’t directly relate to that career path, it gave me a fresh perspective on other possibilities I could explore, such as research or roles that combine healthcare with science. It was a great reminder of how flexible a STEM background can be and encouraged me to stay open-minded about where my studies and interests might take me.”
Miss Clarke, who accompanied the students, praised their maturity, confidence, and aspirational thinking, saying:
“It was wonderful to see our students actively exploring the possibilities that a STEM degree can offer. I wish them every success as they continue to consider which courses to pursue throughout Year 12. The trip was an inspiring start to the students’ post-16 studies, helping them to broaden their horizons and think critically about their future academic and career pathways."
