Debate Mate Competition Organised by SSLP

12 June 2025

Six Year 10 students represented Westminster City School at the Debate Mate competition, which was held on Thursday 12 June at the Kingswood Arts Centre, organised by the Southwark Schools Learning Partnership (SSLP). The team competed in three debates, securing a well-earned win in one and performing admirably in the other two.

Mr Quinn, Subject Leader of History at Westminster City School oversees the debating club. He said: “Amazingly, for four of the students, this competition was their first experience of competitive debating. Additionally, everyone demonstrated excellent composure, critical thinking, and collaborative spirit.

“The event provided a superb opportunity for our students to engage with peers from other schools, building confidence and developing their public speaking skills in a supportive, real-world setting. These inter-school partnerships not only enhance academic growth but also help foster a broader sense of community and shared learning.

“The Judges and fellow participants gave encouraging feedback, particularly praising the students’ communication skills. This will not only allow them to succeed in debate competitions in the future, but also in their studies and future careers.”

A huge congratulations and well done to the following students who were involved:

Sebastian, Ahmed, Peace, Stephen, Tyrell and Luke
