Zain Wins Gold at Top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament
Year 12 student at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, Zain, recently competed in the prominent Tanto Submission Grappling Showcase invitational event in Weston-Super-Mare, UK, a high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament. We caught up with him to learn more about his experience and what it means to him personally to be a gold medallist.
Tell us about the high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament
I competed at the Tanto Submission invitational event, which is a big BJJ tournament. I was invited to take part due to my results and my firm, submission-focused style. It was a great honour to be there and a real test of my abilities.
What was it like for you to compete in this competition?
It was extremely intense and highly competitive, but I thrive in this kind of environment. I had to stay focused, trust in the training that I received, and push through the challenges. I really loved every second of it, that’s what makes BJJ exciting and fun."
How does it feel to be awarded a gold medal from this event?
To be completely honest, winning gold feels amazing, but for me, it’s not just about the medal. Gold will eventually fade or be forgotten, but the memories, the journey, and what the win represents will stay with me forever. That’s the most important part of the experience.
I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when I was only 13 years old. Back then, I was 80kg and not very active, but BJJ helped to transform me both physically and mentally. It gave me confidence, discipline, and a sense of purpose.
What’s next in store for you?
I plan to keep competing, both across the UK and Europe, with the ultimate goal of reaching the highest level in BJJ which is the black belt. However, beyond that I want to inspire other young people who are perhaps in a similar position to the me. If I can change and grow, then they can too.
I’d like to say thanks to my coaches, my teammates, and Westminster City School for all the support that I've received. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I’m just getting started and I’m confident that there’s so much more to achieve.
