'Sunny Side Up' at Theatre Peckham

2 March 2023

On Wednesday 1 March, selected students in Years 7, 8 and 9 ventured to Theatre Peckham, a multi-award-winning cultural venue for artistic excellence and Social change which was founded in 1986.

Students had the privilege to view the lyrical solo performance piece 'Sunny Side Up' by David Alade which has a combination of drama and poetry. The story is set in the mind of David where he discusses his upbringing in the third person, whom he refers to as “Little D”.

The narrative covers David's life events from primary school to university, including growing up in Peckham, overcoming obstacles with the wrong friendship groups and coping with grief after losing his father. At the end of the show the boys were able to ask questions to David and the Director Suzan McClean about the production as well as find out more about their specific roles.

Nathan, who is in Year 8 at Westminster City School commented on the production saying:

"It is a very powerful story line. I really enjoyed David's passion which was portrayed very well throughout the performance; the narrative was relatable."

Dipo, who is in Year 7 at Westminster City School added:

"The production was interesting, powerful and inspirational. In my opinion, the sound effects enhanced the show and I think that David had a great stage presence despite the fact that it was a solo performance."
