An insight into Westminster City School's Sixth Form - "Nurturing"

3 March 2023

Being a Sixth Form student at Westminster City School is about so much more than just acquiring knowledge. Studying here prepares young men and women for future study and employment, combining academic excellence with guidance on applying to university and helping students to pursue their passion. We interviewed a number of our students in Year 12 who have shared their experiences of what it is like to study at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form.

Name: Aaisho

Former Secondary School: Sydenham School

A Level Subjects: Maths, Biology and Chemistry

Why did you choose to enrol at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form?

When I visited Westminster City School’s website, I saw information regarding the Polar Capital Aspire Scheme (PCAS) which led to me wanting to find out more. I discovered that this school offers support to all students so that they have equal opportunities despite their backgrounds.

Secondly, I was extremely amazed by the academic achievements of the Sixth Form. A Level Results Day 2022 saw around 1/3 of students who secured places at Russell Group universities. This reassured me that Westminster City School’s Sixth Form was a place of high quality education where I would be able to thrive and achieve the very best. During my first month here, I was able to see the truthfulness in this.

What are your future plans and aspirations?

I am hoping to study Medicine after taking a gap year when I complete my A Levels so that I can expand and develop myself outside of academics. I want to have the opportunity to gain additional skills and experience that will benefit me throughout my personal and work life.

How did you find the transition from secondary school to Westminster City School’s Sixth Form?

At first, the transition was scary as all I had heard during my time in secondary school was how big the jump is from GCSEs to A Levels. However, the first few days at Westminster City School were filled with team building exercises which helped to diminish the worry of making friends.

Additionally, as lessons began, I became more comfortable in my new environment and made the best use of my time to study and catch up on class work. Our Year 13 Student Support Officers and Careers Advisor were readily available when I felt overwhelmed which was instrumental in helping me to adjust rapidly.

What are your impressions of the Sixth Form?

It is clear that Westminster City School’s Sixth Form is an academically challenging establishment, but it is also somewhere that cares about developing young people as well as helping them to secure good grades. Every assembly teaches us the importance of different values in our lives such as integrity, as explained in our recent assembly. It isn’t a place that cares more about having achievements but rather somewhere that provides support and opportunities which are plentiful; as seen through the bountiful emails sent by our Pastoral Manager, Mr Caprioli.

Why would you recommend prospective students to join Westminster City School’s Sixth Form?

I would recommend Westminster City School’s Sixth Form to students who want to grow as individuals and feel as if their 2 years have amounted to something they can be proud. Every day I see that the staff and other students such as the student leadership team have pushed us to be the best we can be.

I would advise prospective students to take every opportunity that is presented to them no matter their anxiety or current feelings. Sixth Form is a chance to really develop yourself into who you want to be and it is the time to decide if you want to grow or remain stagnant. I would also say in terms of academic, don't be afraid to ask questions, ask for help, and put your hand up whenever you are in doubt.

What makes Westminster City School’s Sixth Form special?

“Nurturing”

I feel that Westminster City School’s Sixth Form has given me the academic environment to change my mindset. The staff members, including the Student Support Officers are very nurturing, they have taught me not to limit myself on what I can do. I feel they have nurtured me and helped me to grow a little and I am excited as to what else I can do under the care of Westminster City School.
