Westminster City School held its annual Re-Dedication Service at St Margaret’s Church on Thursday 24 September, bringing students and staff together at the start of the new academic year to reflect on the school’s values.

This year’s theme of ‘Honouring Our Community’ was looked at by former student Stephen Appiah Kubi, who attended Westminster City School from 2015 to 2022 and returned to speak about the role the school community played in shaping his ambitions.

Stephen, who is a future trainee solicitor at Clifford Chance, shared his insights on the support and encouragement he received during his time at Westminster City School and on the start of his journey to the University of Oxford where he recently graduated.

He said:

“The strength of the Westminster City School community played a huge part in shaping who I am today. I was encouraged to aim high, pushed beyond what I thought I was capable of and supported by staff who believed in me.

“What makes this community special is the way staff, students and alumni support one another. There is an African proverb that says, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.’ I think that really reflects Westminster City School and the importance of recognising the strengths of the school.”

The service gave the school community time to think about the year ahead and rededicate itself to the values and expectations that shape daily life at Westminster City School. Students were encouraged by Headteacher, Mr Broughton to stay focused in their studies, have the courage to take on new challenges and remember to uphold the values of Wisdom, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence.

There was also an added sense of eagerness for our Year 7 and Year 12 students, as this was their first visit to St Margaret’s Church as part of the Westminster City School community. During the walk from Palace Street, several Year 12 students mentioned the beauty of the church as they approached. 

Once inside, a positive and memorable moment came from our Year 7 students who didn’t hold back or shy away from singing, they sang every hymn with confidence and enthusiasm. Their voices filled St Margaret’s Church and brought a real sense of warmth to the service which was centred on belonging, community and shared purpose.

The occasion was a great way to officially start the new school year, bringing everyone together in one of the places that forms an important part of life at Westminster City School.
