Two Year 9 students from Westminster City School, Christian and Judah, have been invited to join Inner Voices Youth Choir, continuing their musical journey which first started when they joined the school as Year 7 Music Scholars. Inner Voices Youth Choir is a London-based youth choir, directed by Ed Watkins, that brings together young singers from different parts of London, giving them the chance to take part in rehearsals, performances and residential opportunities.

Director of Music at Westminster City School, Ms Chan, has seen the progress of Christian and Judah since Year 7. She said:

“We are really proud of Christian and Judah. They began their musical journeys here as Year 7 Music Scholars, singing in the Chamber Choir and playing in the school orchestra. They have shown real commitment to developing their musical skills and it is wonderful to see that recognised through their selection for Inner Voices Youth Choir.”

The link with Inner Voices also reflects the wider Westminster City School music community. A number of former students are now established members of the choir and some have gone on to support younger singers.

Ms Chan added:

“It is also special to see our alumni, including Temi, who is a longstanding member of Inner Voices, now mentoring younger students who first met through Chamber Choir. It is a great example of how the relationships built at Westminster City School continue outside the classroom and beyond a student's time at school.”

Judah, shared the following:

“When I started at Westminster City School in Year 7 and applied to become a Music Scholar, being selected gave me confidence in my ability as a musician. Joining a choir like Inner Voices is exciting, and I am especially looking forward to the residential trip to York.”

Christian also reflected on how much the scholarship has shaped his experience of music at school. He said:

“I applied for the Music Scholarship because it seemed like a great opportunity. Before becoming a Music Scholar, I never had one-to-one music lessons. Since then, I have had experiences I never would have expected, including performing at Victpria Station and at Raffles London at The OWO. Those opportunities have really helped to develop my understanding of music.

“I’m very grateful to have been selected for Inner Voices Youth Choir. I know it will involve a lot of hard work but I’m really motivated and looking forward to it.”

The Westminster City School Music Scholarship is open to incoming Year 7 students who show existing musical talent and potential. Successful candidates receive free music tuition and are encouraged to take an active role in the school’s ensembles, choirs and orchestra, with opportunities to develop both their musicianship and leadership.
