Year 12 Students Debate Interest Rates at Young Economists' Conference
A group of Year 12 Economics students from Westminster City School joined more than 250 students from schools across Southwark for the sixth annual SSLP Young Economists’ Conference on Tuesday 30 June, hosted by Dulwich College.
The conference brought together economists and industry professionals to explore some of the key issues shaping today’s global economy while giving students an insight into the wide range of careers available within economics and finance.
The keynote address was delivered by Katherine Peachey, Head of Equinor Ventures, who spoke about the transition from traditional energy to renewable technologies and the role venture capital plays in supporting innovation. Students also attended specialist sessions exploring digital finance and the use of data to better understand the world around us through economics.
The day concluded with an interactive workshop where students worked in mixed-school teams to take on the role of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee. Using real economic data, each team analysed current economic conditions before deciding whether interest rates should be raised, lowered or held. Students then presented and defended their decisions during a press conference type challenge, developing their analytical thinking, teamwork and presentation skills.

Year 12 student, Alexandra said:
"I especially enjoyed the Young Economists’ Conference because we took part in a range of insightful talks. It also pushed me outside of my comfort zone as we had the opportunity to present our own economic ideas and justify them to the judges."
Paula, who is also in Year 12 and attended the conference, added:
"The conference gave me a broader perspective on the world of economics as we heard from professionals working across the industry. I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to take part."
Nasseneba also reflected on the experience. She said:
"The conference allowed me to explore the wide range of careers and opportunities linked to economics that I hadn’t been aware of before."
At Westminster City School, we are committed to providing students with opportunities that extend learning outside of the classroom. Events such as the SSLP Young Economists’ Conference enable students to engage directly with industry professionals, apply their classroom learning to real life economic challenges and gain more understanding of the many pathways available within economics, finance and other related careers.
