Amos Bursary Varsity Scholars Event

17 April 2024

“You are the brightest and the best, irrespective of your background.”

Recently, Amos Bursary Scholars from Westminster City School and other schools had the opportunity to attend the Varsity Scholars event which was organised through The Amos Bursary.

Students were able to explore the Oxbridge process looking at what makes a ‘perfect’ personal statement to the importance of making a memorable impression in interviews.

Westminster City School had the chance to speak to Deputy Head Prefect, Jamoi, who is in Year 12 and an Amos Bursary Scholar about her experience at the Varsity Scholars event. She explained:

“At the outset, we were tasked with picking our strong three subjects, and my top two choices were Computer Science or Economics and Management at the University of Oxford. We delved into dissecting the content we would encounter over the four years, identifying aspects we resonated with and those we found challenging.

“We also reflected on our extra and super-curricular activities, where I highlighted my roles as Deputy Head Prefect at Westminster City School, participation in the University of Southampton robotics competition, and founding my own business at the age of 16. These experiences not only shaped me but also showcased my multifaceted skills and leadership qualities.

“Words cannot describe how grateful I am for The Amos Bursary scholarship as it has undoubtedly bolstered my confidence and readiness to pursue my academic ambitions at Oxbridge. Thank you to Varsity Scholars for this amazing class.”

Mary Lonsdale, Chief Executive of award winning Varsity Scholars said:

“It was a dynamic, fun filled day and I think any university would be lucky to receive applications from such a talented group! Thank you for inviting us Charmaine Odusina and Colleen Amos OBE…”

The Amos Bursary ensures that talented young people of African and Caribbean descent have the opportunity to excel in education and beyond.
