A taste of university
Year 9 pupils have been experiencing university life, by attending a taster week at City, University of London.
Nine Westminster City School pupils undertook the Pathway to the Professions taster week at City, which has sites throughout London and a main campus at Northampton Square, in the Finsbury area of Islington. This was an excellent opportunity for our pupils to find out more about the subjects available at university and future career options, as well as build their understanding of life at university.
Year 9 pupil, Nicolas, (pictured, above, with his City, University of London pass) has been reflecting on his amazing week at City. He said: “On Monday, after first meeting with current City students and staff, we were taken on a tour of the campus and attended a lecture about careers and pathways at university. There was even a Starbucks on campus!
“On Tuesday, after working in small groups to create a poster about the mind, we had an interesting lecture on psychology. A therapist spoke to us about her job, showing us videos on how to respond to patients and talking to us about training to become a therapist.
“Wednesday was my favourite day! For the first half of the day, we had to create a shelter out of newspapers, which required a lot of team work and communication. Then, after lunch, another professional come in to talk to us about business studies and careers in that field.
“Two City graduates, who currently work for the NHS, came in on Thursday. They taught us about the recovery position and about two different types of arm slings. We learnt how to carry out the recovery position and had a chance to put arm slings on each other!
“On our final day, a barrister spoke to us about working for the courts. She explained that, to be a barrister, you don’t necessarily need to have any background in law. She also let us feel a barrister’s wig, which was made out of pure horse hair!”
At the end of their fascinating and informative week at City, our pupils attended their own small graduation ceremony. They got to throw their own mortar boards in the air and received certificates for taking part in the taster week.
