Westminster City School Students Celebrate Success in UKMT Senior Maths Challenge

23 October 2026

Westminster City School students have achieved excellent results in this year’s UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge, with 111 students earning certificates and 37 qualifying for the next stage of the competition.

A total of 146 students from Years 9 to 13 took part, with 37 achieving Gold certificates, 30 Silver and 44 Bronze.

The UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge tests students’ mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities through a series of challenging questions for them to think unfamiliar methods and solutions.

All 37 Gold certificate winners qualified for follow-on competitions which includes 30 progressing to the Senior Kangaroo and 7 qualifying for the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1), one of the UK’s 'most demanding mathematics competitions' for students.

Special recognition for Daniel in Year 10, who qualified for BMO1, and Bruce in Year 9, who secured a place in the Senior Kangaroo. Both were competing against older students, which makes this accomplishment even more impressive!

Mr Okyere, Mathematics Enrichment and Primary Transition Coordinator was pleased with the students’ results. He said:

"I am incredibly proud of this year’s achievements. To see so many of our students earn certificates and so many qualify for the follow-on rounds, is a credit to their dedication and resilience. They have tackled difficult problems with real determination and I congratulate every one of them."

Year 12 student Stephen, who has taken part in the Senior Mathematical Challenge since Year 10, was happy to see his scores improve again this year. He said:

"I’ve participated in the Senior Maths Challenge since Year 10 and each year my score has improved. I found this year’s paper quite difficult, but I managed to work through it. I’m grateful to have been able to take part again and I’m excited to compete in the British Mathematical Olympiad for the first time."

Year 12 student Elzain, who also qualified for BMO1, said:

"Taking part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge has allowed me to explore my interest in Maths. I enjoyed the problem-solving aspect because it genuinely challenged me to apply mathematical reasoning and approach unfamiliar problems in different ways. Qualifying for BMO1 is a significant achievement for me and I’m looking forward to the next round."

Whilst all 37 qualifying students patiently await the Senior Kangaroo and British Mathematical Olympiad competitions, we would like to take this opportunity wish them all the very best of luck.

Congratulations to everyone who took part and represented Westminster City School in this year’s challenge.
