Our superb Inspiring Musical Futures concert, involving Westminster City School pupils and professional musicians, took place at St Peter’s Church, Eaton Square this week.
Raising funds for our Inspiring Musical Futures programme, our concert entertained an audience (which included pupils, staff, parents/carers and governors) with a range of classical and contemporary music. Opening with a rousing rendition of Queen’s We Are The Champions by our School Orchestra, other highlights included our School Choir’s powerful version of Boys II Men’s End Of The Road and our School Jazz Band’s lively performance of You’ve Got A Friend In Me from the Toy Story soundtrack.
Speaking at our concert, our Headteacher, Mr Broughton, said: “It is always sad to hear music being squeezed from the curriculum but that is certainly not the case at Westminster City School. We continue to nurture the musical abilities of our pupils and introduce them to the world of music. This evening was an excellent showcase for the out-of-this-world talents of our pupils."
Involving over 50 young people from across our School, the concert was an opportunity for our pupils to gain valuable live performance experience, as well as demonstrate their considerable talents which have been nourished by our Music Department. Dean, a member of our School Orchestra, explains: “The Music Department has easily been the best part of my time at Westminster City School. Through the Department, I learned to play the piano and cello, and began to teach myself the guitar. I have discovered my love for a variety of musical genres and, with incredible teachers like Mr Valles and Ms Crespo, I have made an incredible amount of progress.”
Mr Stuart Whatmore, Head of the Tri-borough Music Hub which oversees the delivery of music education in three West London boroughs, was in the audience. He said: “Congratulations on a stunning concert. It was absolutely brilliant in every way – superb musicianship, great variety of repertoire and genre, professionally delivered and slick, and all supported by outstanding staff. There are some very talented musicians who are clearly accessing a high-quality musical experience at Westminster City School. Well done!”
Our concert was raising funds for our School’s innovative Inspiring Musical Futures programme, which aims to ensure every Year 7 pupil has access to a free instrumental lesson each week.
