Singing their praises

26 November 2019

Six members of Westminster City School’s Choir will perform in the English National Opera’s forthcoming production of Carmen.

While our Choir prepared for our Inspiring Musical Futures concert on Wednesday 27 November, some members received exciting news about a future performance opportunity – congratulations Ademola, Antonio, Jonathan, Kyrese, Theo and David!

The ENO recently undertook company cast auditions for their upcoming production of Carmen, one of the world’s most popular and most frequently performed operas. Our Choir members were successful in an initial audition at our School and then at a second audition against pupils from other schools. They will now rehearse for a number of months to prepare for a week of performances. Watch this space for further details of what is sure to be a fantastic production next spring.

However, this is not our School’s only collaboration with the ENO, one of the two principal opera companies based in London. Mr Cecile, from Westminster City School’s Music Department, explains: “At the start of the academic year, the ENO spent a day with pupils from across our School, running workshops and performances. Following this, some of our KS4 pupils were given the opportunity to work with the ENO in the lead up to a small informal performance at the London Coliseum.

“For a number of weeks, these ENO professionals have been working with our pupils to fine tune their voices to accommodate a number of different singing styles, as well as opera. Our pupils will now perform to their parents/carers and friends. We are very grateful for this opportunity and look forward to working further with the fabulous ENO on future projects.”

As well as entertaining audiences, it seems our Choir is inspiring others to start singing! Following a coffee morning with parents/carers, held by Assistant Headteacher Ms Mole, some interest arose to introduce a parents’/carers’ choir for our School’s annual Christmas concert. If any parents/carers would like to be involved, please email Mr Cecile on:
