Students Turn £15,000 into £2.2 Million in Stock Market Challenge

17 April 2026

On Thursday 16 April, selected Year 9 students from Westminster City School took part in an Inter-School Stock Market Challenge at Lady Margaret School in Fulham.

The trip, organised by Mr Chaffey, Faculty Leader of Enterprise & Social Sciences, gave students the opportunity to take part in a live trading simulator, competing against other schools and applying their knowledge in a fast-paced environment.

Throughout the day, students worked in teams to analyse market data, make investment decisions and develop their trading strategies.

Sharing feedback regarding the full day of activities, Mr Chaffey said:

“It was great to see the students interact with others from the wider community and apply their skills to a new experience. All the boys who were selected are considering GCSE Business Studies next year, so it was a fantastic opportunity to motivate them for their GCSEs.

"It was nice to see how their confidence grew over the course of the day as they refined their strategies.”

One group, made up of Joshua, Ali and Harry, achieved the strongest result from Westminster City School, turning an initial £15,000 into £2.2 million during the simulation.

Each student took on a specific role within the team:

•           Joshua acted as the “Runner”, completing trades

•           Ali took on the role of “Finance Manager”, analysing data

•           Harry worked as the “Financial Accountant”, tracking performance and ensuring profitability

Comments from students who also spoke positively about the experience includes the following:

“Thank you for this opportunity, it really made me excited to study Business and Economics.” (Hudson, Year 9)

“This was a fantastic day. I felt really welcomed and it’s something I’d love to do it again.” (Mark, Year 9).

Financial literacy is an essential life skill, and we are proud to give our students opportunities to build understanding as early as possible, so they feel confident making informed decisions. Thank you to Ms Stevenson, Headteacher at Lady Margaret School for hosting this event, who also praised the day and expressed interest in running the event again in the future.
