Westminster City School Celebrates World Book Week 2026
Westminster City School marked World Book Day with a week of reading focused activities from Monday 16 to Friday 20 March, with students across all year groups taking part.
One of the highlights was the Book Bonanza, which encouraged students to visit the library and borrow books from their chosen genre. Thanks to support from the Children’s Book Project, every student who borrowed a book was able to take one home to keep or share once they had finished reading it.
The library also hosted an after-school screening of the movie Stormbreaker, giving students the chance to see how a story can move from the page of a book to the screen.
A very nice moment came during the Sixth Form Tutor Reading Takeover, where Year 12 students read with younger students during form time. It brought different year groups together and created a shared experience around reading throughout the entire school.
Year 7 students also took part in workshops with visiting author Rob Bradley, a poet, storytelling songwriter and freestyle rap champion. His sessions focused on rhyme, rhythm and writing, giving students the opportunity to create and perform their own work. He also delivered assemblies for Years 7 and 8, ending the week with a live rap performance.

There was also a Book Character Hunt running throughout the week, with students searching for characters hidden around the school and taking notes of key facts as they searched different areas and departments.
The week built naturally on our school’s wider Tutor Reading Programme, where reading is already part of the daily routine during form time. Activities like these gave students the chance to engage with reading in different ways including through performance, discussion or even choosing something new to read. Thank you to Mr Chapman, our Library Manager, for organising the week’s activities.
