Editor-in-Chief- Geordie Greig Inspires Year 12 Students

25 February 2026

“Don’t let doubt be your friend, let confidence be your friend.”

On Tuesday 24 February, Geordie Greig, Editor-in-Chief of The Independent, delivered an inspiring talk about his career in journalism, the importance of curiosity and self-belief.

Geordie addressed the students in the audience, speaking about his own journey and his time studying English at university as well as how his career in journalism began by simply writing to people he found interesting. He encouraged students to continuously 'feed' their talents and pursue the subjects that genuinely spark their curiosity. He said:

“You have the capacity to bring about change. Follow your own curiosity because when you are young, you have more time and opportunity to make the necessary effort which will put you 40 steps ahead.”

He also emphasised the importance of reading widely, describing it as a way to develop “gymnastic intelligence that’s there for free”. To help students to grasp the impact of doing so, he made reference to well known and influential writers such as C. S. Lewis, highlighting the positive change that stems from literature and critical thinking.

During a lively Q&A session, Geordie offered practical advice on preparing for university and job interviews, stressing that confidence is a skill that can be learned. He urge students to “learn to be a confident person.”

Year 12 student Ariyanna reflected on Geordie Greig's visit, saying:

“Hearing from Geordie Greig gave me valuable insight into the realities of the media industry and how journalism is evolving in the digital age. A key point that stayed with me was the importance of staying curious and proactive in seeking opportunities. Going forward, I plan to ask more thoughtful questions, network when possible, and take greater initiative in my studies and work experience.”

Misha, who is also in Year 12 and was involved in the Q&A session said:

“Geordie filled me with hope when he explained how journalism can counteract division through connection, tolerance and dialogue. Seeing journalism as a civic bridge that can remedy structural and social disparities was inspiring. His journey also challenged the idea that success requires a rigid life plan, embracing curiosity and taking risks can lead to meaningful opportunities.

"When he told his story from the beginning where he wrote to others he found interesting, it became evident that embracing a curious, open-minded attitude and willingness to take risks can lead to meaningful opportunities; it can feel reassuring, especially in a world where the youth are often pressured to map out their entire futures early on and this all the more made his achievements authentic and human."

Thank you to Geordie Greig for his time, and Futures for All for making this opportunity possible for our students. Geordie's talk provided our students with the chance to be reminded of how important it is to remain curious and take the initiative to create their own success stories.
