Government Lawyer Inspires Year 12 Pathways to Law Students

12 December 2025

On Thursday 11 December, Year 12 students who are on Westminster City School’s Pathways to Law programme took part an informative presentation which was given by Mellissa Akinya, a solicitor for the Government Legal Department and founder of the Black Lawyers Circle.

Mellissa shared her experiences representing various governmental bodies, giving students a clear insight into what it is like representing various governmental bodies. And the nature of her day-to-day work. She also successfully highlighted the broad range of career paths available to aspiring lawyers in today’s society, proving how legal careers extend beyond traditional roles in private practice.

Additionally, Mellissa spoke extensively about the barriers she has faced on her path to becoming a Senior Government Lawyer, sharing strategies for overcoming challenges and persevering in a competitive profession. Her talk provided students with both practical knowledge and personal inspiration as they begin to think about the different work experiences and internships that will enable them to stand out amongst their peers.

This session formed part of Westminster City School’s Pathways to Law programme, which supports Sixth Form students in exploring legal careers through targeted workshops, mentoring, and insight from industry professionals. The programme helps students to develop the skills, confidence, and networks needed to pursue law at university and beyond.
