Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Experience of Hamilton
On Tuesday 18 November, choir students from across several year groups at Westminster City School enjoyed a memorable trip to see the award-winning musical Hamilton. Thanks to Westminster City School’s central location and strong relationships with local theatres, such opportunities give our young musicians the chance to explore beyond the classroom and experience the performing arts at a professional level.
The visit was extra special due to an exclusive post-show session arranged for our students. They were invited to stay for a technical demonstration, where members of the production team explained how lighting, sound, stage movement and special effects come together to create the fast-paced world of the show. This was followed by a Q&A with cast members, who spoke openly about their careers, training and the reality of performing in one of London’s most popular productions.
Year 13 student Caleb, who initially initiated the idea for the trip, explained:
“I’ve always been interested in theatre and the work that goes into it, so I asked Miss Chan if it might be possible to see Hamilton. It’s one of my favourite musicals, so it was amazing to be able to go.”
Christian in Year 8 said:
“The technical demonstration and the storyline were very interesting and enjoyable. It was a great opportunity and something completely different.”
Sebastian in Year 11, who is currently studying Music at GCSE was able to see the direct link between the production and what he’s learning his is Music lesson. He said:
“I definitely enjoyed the music throughout the production because it was so original, and it really helped me understand my GCSE content at a deeper level.”
We are grateful to the entire Hamilton team for welcoming our students so warmly and going above and beyond to enrich our students’ learning and broaden their horizons. Seeing a live musical of this scale and understanding the techniques behind it is a rare opportunity for many.
