Exploring Consciousness, Lecture by Leading Neuroscientist Anil Seth
On Monday 30 June, a group of Year 12 Philosophy and Ethics students from Westminster City School had the exciting opportunity to attend a at Dulwich College, part of the “What Makes Us Human?” series. The talk was delivered by renowned neuroscientist and author Professor Anil Seth which focused on the intriguing topic of consciousness and how we perceive the world around us.
Mr Jewkes, Head of Religious Studies at Westminster City School, shared:
“Held in the impressive Great Hall, Professor Seth’s lecture explored the material nature of consciousness and the brain’s role not just as a receiver of information, but as what he described as a “prediction machine.” He explained how our perceptions are often subjective and shaped by the brain’s expectations, illustrated through a series of striking optical illusions, including a discussion of the famous viral debate over the colour of “the dress.
“Our students engaged thoughtfully with the session, posing questions during the Q&A and even continuing the conversation with Professor Seth on the train journey back to Victoria Station, making the most of every opportunity to deepen their understanding.”
Reflecting on the visit, Year 12 student Ronni, said:
“The Dulwich College trip was so insightful, and I'm sure that it will be beneficial when we begin to study self, death and the afterlife. There were a range of optical illusions that the speaker showed us, and he even discussed the well-known blue-black dress (it is definitely not white and gold). I felt very fortunate to be able to go on this trip, and I can't wait to write about some of the things he said in my essays!”
This stimulating experience offered our students a valuable glimpse into current philosophical and scientific thinking around consciousness, encouraging critical thinking and academic curiosity ahead of their A-Level studies.
