A Visit to Bethlem Museum of the Mind

4 June 2025

On Tuesday 3 June, Year 12 students who are currently studying A-Level Psychology at Westminster City School visited Bethlem Museum of the Mind, a unique opportunity to delve into the rich and complex history of mental health care in the UK. These students explored how mental illness was diagnosed and treated over the past 500 years, gaining insight into historical practices.

Through engaging exhibits and historical accounts, students saw how societal attitudes, scientific understanding, and medical advancements have drastically transformed mental health facilities and treatments. Students also had the chance to hear from a psychiatrist who shared his experiences with patients, ranging from phobias and OCD related cases.

Alex, a Year 12 student at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, said:

“Academically speaking, I believe this trip has helped me to understand the world of Psychopathology on a deeper level, looking through the different types of treatments and how the diagnosis component works for psychiatrists, as well as introduce us to the world of Forensic Psychology and the processes involved with dealing with and treating people who committed serious criminal offences that we will learn next year. It has also solidified my passion and liking for Psychology as the trip has made me even more eager to pursue it as a possible future career.”

Christopher, who is also in Year 12 at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, added:

“The trip was insightful on many accounts, the opportunity to explore the history of mental health and the perceptions surrounding it, made me reflect on how it wasn’t just about looking back, however, we learned to realise that despite the growing awareness around mental health today, mental health is still surrounded by taboo for many people. The museum really highlighted how stigma can still silence those struggling, even in a society that claims to be more accepting.

“It was truly inspiring to hear how passionate the specialists are about breaking down the barriers and stigma, all while supporting individuals at their most vulnerable moments. Their insight into reality brought the subject to life, giving me a whole new perspective on how psychology connects to the wider world beyond the classroom.”

The visit not only deepened students' understanding of mental health history but also inspired many to consider their future roles. The opportunity for students to hear first-hand experiences from current mental health practitioners, who shared their perspectives on modern psychiatric care and offered valuable advice for students interested in pursuing careers in the field was priceless.
