Alumnus of the Month

9 May 2025

Cyril Afram is our Westminster City School Alumnus of the Month for May. Cyril left Westminster City School in 2024. He is now Ambassador for Under Armour. 'Under Armour is an American sportswear company that manufactures footwear and apparel headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, United States'.

Please tell us a little about yourself – where do you work and how did you get to this role?

I am currently studying at university as a student and I am also an athlete, sponsored by Under Armour. I train and compete in two different sports (football as well as track and field). I got my role through a programme called 'UA Next' where thousands of athletes from across the UK come to London to test their physical skills with a chance of getting a sponsorship from Under Armour. The top 10 out of thousands then move onto the next level where the top 3 are announced with the sponsorship. I was one of the top 3 and I now receive training, equipment and coaching on a professional level.

What are some of your proudest achievements since leaving Westminster City School?

Some of my proudest achievements include being accepted into my first choice university, earning a prestigious sponsorship from Under Armour, and securing a spot in the first team of my football club. Each milestone represents years of dedication, hard work, and the support I received along the way.

What advice would you give someone looking to follow a similar career path?

“Trust in the Lord your God and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). As someone who believes in God, this verse has guided me through some of the most challenging and rewarding decisions in my journey. Believing in a power greater than myself has helped me become comfortable with making uncomfortable choices, ones that often lead to growth. Over the past few months, failure has been my greatest teacher. I’ve taken risks that sometimes led to success, and other times to lessons, but never to regret. I truly believe that the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing at all. Growth lies beyond the fear of failure.

How have your experiences at Westminster City School contributed to your life and successes since leaving school?

My time at Westminster City School instilled in me the discipline to strive for excellence, no matter how I felt. There were moments when laziness or procrastination tried to creep in, but I learned to push past those feelings and focus on the tasks at hand. The school also nurtured in me a strong sense of compassion and integrity.

In today’s world, it’s easy to let negativity harden you, especially when faced with rudeness or disrespect. However, Westminster City School taught me the importance of being kind, respectful, and generous, regardless of how others behave. Maintaining a positive mindset and treating others with kindness isn't just the right thing to do, it leads to a more fulfilling and successful life. Positive input always produces positive outcomes.

Can you describe one of your fondest memories from your time at Westminster City School?

I have many fond memories from my time at Westminster City School, but Sports Day in Year 11 stands out the most. That day, I broke records and won races that many thought I wouldn’t. It wasn’t just about the victories but it was about proving to myself and others what I was capable of when I committed fully. The energy, the support from classmates, teachers, and the sense of pride I felt are things I’ll never forget. It was one of those rare moments where hard work, preparation, and belief all came together.

What’s next?

My goal is to complete my university studies and pursue a career as a professional athlete. Whether it’s in football or track and field, I’m committed to competing at the highest level. More than just personal success, I want to build a legacy, one that allows me to give back to the people and communities that supported me along the way. I believe greatness isn't just about what you achieve, but how you use your platform to uplift others.

We love hearing what our alumni have been doing since leaving Westminster City School. Each month, we are inviting a member of our alumni community to share their story of life after Palace Street. If you’re an alumnus who would like to take part, or you’d like to volunteer an alumnus that you know, then please drop us an email.
