Virtual Latin Club

12 November 2020

While the pandemic has curtailed many activities in the UK right now, Westminster City School pupils can still learn Latin from a Cambridge specialist, through our Virtual Latin Club.

Our English Department has been running a Latin Club since 2019 and although members are used to meeting in person, as the above picture of their trip to Westminster City Hall last December shows, learning has now moved online. Our Year 7 and 8 pupils can still keep up with this fascinating subject during the global pandemic and new members are also welcome to join our Virtual Latin Club.

Ms Walsh, from our English Department, explains: “Our Latin Club’s teacher, who studied at the University of Cambridge, is creating interesting and engaging lessons, specifically for our pupils, on Microsoft Teams. This is a great opportunity to learn Latin, which can support your understanding of many other subjects and prepare you for many future professions.

“As well as being a well-respected subject by universities and employers, there are many benefits to studying Latin. It is fantastic preparation for learning the Romance languages and helps with English study, as the increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar mean students of Latin typically score the highest on tests of English vocabulary! Latin provides a preparation for important professions (such as roles in law, medicine and science) that are steeped in Latin or English words derived from Latin. It also enables you to more fully understand and appreciate the history of the Roman Empire, as well as enjoy some of the world’s most influential works of literature in their original language.”
