Christmas carol celebrations
Our Westminster City School Carol Service saw a record number of parents and carers join pupils and staff to celebrate the Christmas message.
Taking place at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey, our Carol Service was a festive and joyful occasion, including performances by our School Choir, School Orchestra and School Wind Band, plus readings and a collection for local charity, The Passage.
While our School Choir wowed the audience with renditions of The Cherry Tree Carol and Coventry Carol, our School Orchestra performed their own arrangements of Ding Dong Merrily on High and God Rest You Merry Gentleman, and our School Wind Band undertook a Christmas carol medley.
Carols that all pupils, staff and parents/carers sang included We Three Kings Of Orient Are, O Come, All Ye Faithful, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Our Carol Service ended with a superb solo performance of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by Year 10 pupil, Kelasson Daniel.
There were also three powerful readings during our Carol Service. The first was in Dutch, by Year 9 pupil, Melchior, and his mother. There were then further readings by The Reverend Anthony Ball, Canon of Westminster Abbey and Chair of our Governors, and by our Headteacher, Mr Peter Broughton.
Father Garry Swinton, Westminster City School’s chaplain, explained: “This term, in our worship, we have been exploring Integrity, one of our School values. Our Carol Service readings demonstrated the place that integrity has when God shares his humanity with us at Christmas.”
Towards the end of our Carol Service, a collection was passed for The Passage, a charity working to end homelessness. (Parents/carers can also donate via ParentPay). Last week, a number of pupils from Hill house, nominated by form tutors for being excellent members of our School community, visited The Passage. At our Carol Service, some of these pupils gave a brief introduction to the charity, explaining how The Passage aims to help homeless people leave the streets, return to work and take on a constructive role in society.
Our Carol Service at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey, remains an important event in the life of Westminster City School. Attendance is compulsory for Years 7 to 9 and our sixth formers, while many in Years 10 and 11 also ask to attend. Parents and carers are always invited to join our Carol Service and this year a record number of places – over 100 – were reserved by parents and carers.
