Christmas carols

4 December 2019

Our School’s annual Carol Service takes place at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey, on Monday 16 December.

Our Carol Service remains an important event in the life of Westminster City School. It begins at 5.15pm (although all are requested to be seated by 5pm) and is compulsory for Years 7 to 9 and our sixth formers. Although Years 10 and 11 are not expected to attend, due to numbers, many ask to attend and may do so with their parents/carers.

Parents/carers are invited to join our Carol Service and may sit with their son or daughter in their form group. Although attendance is free, we ask that parents/carers reserve their seats in advance, for security reasons.

To reserve your space, please complete our online form. You will be sent an email confirmation of your reservation, which you should bring with you to our Carol Service. Please note that Westminster City School pupils and students do not need to reserve a place in advance.

Father Garry Swinton, Westminster City School’s chaplain, said: “The support of our parents/carers has increased year-by-year at our Carol Service. I look forward to welcoming all to what is sure to be a wonderful and joyous evening, as we come together as a community to celebrate the Christmas message.”

During our Carol Service, a collection will be taken for The Passage, a charity working to end homelessness. (Parents/carers can also donate via ParentPay). Earlier this week, a number of pupils from Hill house, nominated by their form tutors for being excellent members of our School community, visited The Passage. They were given an informative tour and talk by a representative of the charity.

Father Garry Swinton added: "Our pupils learnt a lot on their visit to The Passage. Amir in 9H, for example, was surprised to learn that life expectancy for many long-term homeless people is in the mid-40s, nearly half the national average. Our pupils also got to see for themselves the wide range of support offered by The Passage, which includes meals, healthcare, and assistance back into work and with finding somewhere to live."

On the day of our Carol Service, Monday 16 December, our Year 10 and 11 pupils will be dismissed during period 6. All other pupils and students will be supervised and fed, at our School’s expense, before being escorted to our Carol Service. All are then dismissed from St Margaret’s Church, at the end of our Carol Service, at around 6.15pm.
