Year 7 Motown Magic Concert
On Monday 10 November, Westminster City School’s Main Hall was filled with excitement and applause as our Year 7 students took to the stage for their very first Year 7 Concert. The evening not only celebrated musical talent, but it was also a chance for our students to grow in confidence, work as a teamwork, and have fun performing on a stage in front of an audience.
Under the guidance of Miss G Chan, Head of Music, the students performed a carefully selected set of Motown classics, including:
-
“Dancing in the Street” – Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
-
“Please Mr. Postman” – Originally by The Marvelettes
-
“Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday” – Stevie Wonder
-
“Reach Out I’ll Be There” – The Four Tops
-
“My Girl” – The Temptations
-
“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
-
“(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” – Jackie Wilson
The Year 7 concert was also a celebration of the students’ growth since joining Westminster City School transitioning from Year 6 to Year 7 and a demonstration of how the arts help foster confidence, creativity, and collaboration.
Miss Chan commented on the evening saying:
"Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to support our Year 7 students. Seeing our students’ confidence grow throughout the evening was incredibly rewarding. I am particularly proud of our Year 7 Music Scholars, who performed on stage for the first time in WCS history. Their dedication and skill are inspiring, and they set a brilliant example for their peers."
Students reflected on the experience with pride and enthusiasm. Jacob shared, "It was really fun to perform in front of so many people. Having such a big audience made it feel really special." Vithursh added, "I've never been in a band of five before; but rehearsing and performing together taught me so much and it was a lot of fun."
Clovis also added:
"At first I was nervous, but once we started playing, I felt more confident and proud of our performance." With a big smile on his face, Kornpat said, "it was great to see my parents enjoying our music and to know our practice paid off."
The evening also highlighted the impact of Westminster City School’s music programme. John, one of the Year 7 Music Scholars, said: "Our weekly masterclasses with Miss Chan have helped us grow as musicians and prepared us to perform confidently. Sharing this with the whole Year 7 cohort was amazing."
The Motown Magic Concert was a fantastic example of how Westminster City School nurtures students’ artistic potential and provides opportunities for them to flourish.
Well done to all students in Year 7 for bringing your all to the concert!
