Going for GB greatness
A Year 10 student has been landing on the winning podium, after successful performances at major events like the Team Gym British Championships.
Nehemiah, who has been undertaking gymnastics for the last ten years, currently trains with Southwark Gymnastics Club. His club took part in the Team Gym British Championships last month and, despite it being their first competition in two years, due to the pandemic, Nehemiah was part of the team placed third in the UK on the podium.
Nehemiah explained: “Due to COVID restrictions, my family couldn’t join me at the competition, meaning they only knew how well it had all gone when I walked through the front door with my medal! My family are very proud and continue to be really supportive of my gymnastic ambitions.”
Just the other weekend, Nehemiah was competing once again, as part of the European qualifying trials in Bracknell. This event went well and he will now take part in further trials in December and April, before hopefully being placed in the Great Britain team.
Nehemiah was previously ranked sixth in the UK, as well as being awarded bronze for his vault performance in 2018.
As well as building flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance, participating in gymnastics supports mental wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. For Nehemiah, who been enjoying getting back into training in real-life at his club, after online training during the UK’s lockdown, it is also a lot of fun. When asked to pick a favourite gymnastics routine or task, he said: “I love all of it!”
