Super start to the season

24 September 2021

Competitive sport returned to Westminster City School this week, with fantastic wins for both our Year 8 and Year 11 football teams.

For our Year 8 team, in their first game for our School, it was a 3-2 victory against Pimlico Academy. Our team, pictured above, in their new sports kit, were accompanied by Mr Potten, Head of Year 8. He said: “It was a nervous first 20 minutes, with multiple saves made by Amarkai, before Nigel popped up with a fantastic strike, 25 yards from goal, to take the lead. After half-time, our team conceded an early minute goal but quickly made it 2-1, thanks to a free kick from Nigel to Ebenezer, who then found the top left corner of the net. This was followed up by a corner, driven towards goal by Ebenezer.

“Pimlico made it a tense final five minutes, scoring to make it 3-2, but our Year 8 team managed to hold on and grab the first three points of the season, plus their first win for Westminster City School.”

While Mr Potten was impressed with the entire Year 8 team, special mention must be made of goal scorers (Ebenezer, who scored twice, and Nigel), and our man of the match, Amarkai.

In addition, our Year 11 team beat Pimlico Academy 3-0 in their match on Wednesday, as Mr Bradley explains: “Our team had a nervy introduction, with Pimlico trying to strike a thunderous shot against the post. Thankfully this was cleared to safety and our team then began to find a rhythm, with good passages of play testing the Pimlico goalkeeper. Foday broke the deadlock with a powerful strike from range that the keeper could only parry into his net, silencing the watching crowd.

“Our team really began to put pressure on the back four, which led to great interplay between Antonio and Izaiah, with latter on the end of a first time strike into the top left corner. With more opportunities to put the tie beyond doubt, it was Chika who managed to reach a superb deep cross and head at the near post, thus ensuring all three points came back to Westminster City School.”

Mr Bradley praised the entire Year 11 team for representing Westminster City School so well and playing with a great spirit. He added: “All were clearly excited to be back on the field. However, special mention must go to Cyril, to Cedrik, and to our man of the match, Ugo, who was outstanding at centre back and provided incredible protection for the goal.”

Congratulations to both teams on such a super start to the season.
