Trying out Saracens
Year 8 rugby players at Westminster City School have been training at a top London club this week.
Over 20 of our School’s rugby players were at Copthall Stadium (known as StoneX Stadium), the home ground of Saracens, last Wednesday. They were able to train with coaches for Saracens, building upon and improving their own rugby playing skills.
Mr Potten, from our PE Department, accompanied our players. He said: “This was a great opportunity for our team to learn from world-leading experts and all greatly enjoyed the experience. We’re very grateful to Saracens for welcoming us to Copthall Stadium and for giving up their time to train our players.”
Rugby remains a popular sport at Westminster City School, despite often being new for many pupils when they first join us in Year 7. Our young people have made good use of nearby Green Park for their training and, before pandemic restrictions, had undertaken competitive matches, as well as taking part in the Year 7 Festival of Rugby in November 2019.
After a year in the RFU Championship, Saracens will return to Premiership Rugby, the first tier of rugby in England, in 2021–22. Notable players for Saracens include Owen Farrell, Maro Itoje and Sean Maitland.
