Our efficient engineer

28 June 2021

Gabriel plans to read mechanical engineering with a placement year at Loughborough University. He joined our Sixth Form from Woodcote High School and is completing A Levels in Maths, Physics, and Economics. Gabriel lives in Croydon.

“Making the decision to join Westminster City School’s Sixth Form was easy. I saw it as opportunity to study in the centre of the city and meet people from all over London. I settled in swiftly, making friends during the induction sessions arranged by staff. Teachers are always friendly and the central London location means there are always places to go and eat with your new mates.

“Westminster City School’s Sixth Form has helped me harness my academic potential and given me opportunities to visit many different places of work and study. It is with the input and support of our Sixth Form staff that I came to a decision on where to take my next steps.

“A degree in mechanical engineering will combine everything I am interested in with everything that I am good at. I love the different processes which go behind making machines more efficient in their function and that there is so much potential in the field.

“I applied to Loughborough University as it is an opportunity to study a very technical subject at one of the best facilities in the country, while harnessing work skills with experience in the field. It's also a place where I can reach my footballing potential, as their sports facilities are second to none. I'm looking forward to being independent and to living away from home.”

Loughborough University, in Leicestershire, was named University of the Year in 2019 by The Times and The Sunday Times, becoming the first institution to win this award twice. Notable alumni include the artist Bridget Riley, plus sports stars like Sebastian Coe (Olympic athlete and current Loughborough University chancellor), marathon runner Paula Radcliffe, politician and former wheelchair racer Tanni Grey-Thompson, and rugby union player and coach Sir Clive Woodward.

The majority of our Year 13 have applied to start university in autumn 2021, receiving offers across a range of courses and institutions, both in and out of London. We have been so inspired by the hard work of our sixth formers during this unprecedented time in modern history and have been featuring many of them on our website, talking about their exciting journey towards university.
