A knock on effect
After a stuck in the mud start, Westminster City School’s Year 7 rugby team mauled the opposition at a recent competition.
Taking part in their third one-day rugby tournament at Saracens Rugby Club, our Year 7 team began badly but then converted the shock of losing their first match into later wins.
Our PE teacher, Mr Leckey, explains: “While our pupils have shown great improvement in each visit to Allianz Park, they have been guilty of some slow starts to matches. Indeed, our initial 5-0 loss could have given us a bleak outlook, since our next two schools had beaten Westminster City School twice before. However, I’m proud to say that our team went on to show great skill and physicality in their next two games, plus a great awareness and understanding of rugby.”
Our Year 7 rugby team won their second game 15-5, with three well-built team tries finished by David, Harlem and Hamza, and then won their third game 10-5, with strong teamwork helping David find the space to score twice.
Mr Leckey added: “Congratulations to our Year 7 rugby team and special mention to those players undertaking their first game of rugby – John, Kyrell and Montasir. All showed excellence on the pitch in the latter two matches, plus the resilience needed to bounce back after their first loss. In this respect, our team was not unlike the current England squad, which many of them may aspire to emulate in the future!”
