Over 90% of Westminster City School’s Year 13 have applied to university, receiving offers across a range of courses and institutions for autumn 2020.
Our sixth formers have made applications to universities within and outside of London, including 21 of the prestigious 24 Russell Group institutions like Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London and University College London. Degree programmes span traditional subjects within science, medicine and law, to more contemporary courses like games programming.
Headteacher, Mr Broughton, said: “We are very proud that 92% of our sixth formers applied to university for this autumn. We encourage our young people to reach their full potential and know that, for these students, attending university will increase their knowledge, broaden their horizons, and enable them to gain an internationally recognised qualification that will help with future employment.”
Head of Sixth Form, Ms Dennis, added: “At present, our students hold a number of offers for Russell Group universities, including three for Cambridge or Oxford, two for Imperial College London and another for University College London, whilst other sixth formers wait to hear from institutions like Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, King’s College London, LSE, Warwick, and York.
“In addition, our students have, or are awaiting, offers from universities across London and the UK. These range from BSc Accounting and Finance (with Professional Placement) within Cass Business School at City, University of London to BSc Zoology at the University of Surrey. Cass Business School is consistently ranked amongst the best business schools in the world, while Surrey is regarded as one of the UK's leading research institutions, with 78% of its research ranked ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.”
During their time in our Sixth Form, students are supported in their higher education aspirations. Westminster City School staff provide extensive advice and guidance including mock interviews, talks from university representatives, attendance at UCAS higher education fairs, and mentoring opportunities.
Simon, who has an offer to read BSc Biological Sciences at Imperial College London, explains: “While in Year 12, Westminster City School organised a wonderful placement for me at Imperial, which allowed me to see the ground-breaking research being undertaken there. I had already been interested in a future career in research and, through this placement, I gained a first-hand understanding of what life as a researcher would be like.”
Victor, who has an offer at Oxford, added: “I have always had a passion for science and believe it is an important subject for our world today. Before my Oxford interview, our School staff provided support, even undertaking a mock interview with me. This was very helpful as it allowed me to think further about how I would answer different questions, such as why I wanted to study biochemistry. I was then asked that very question in my actual Oxford interview, just a few weeks later!”
Since many of our sixth formers joined in Year 7, leaving Westminster City School this summer means there are some mixed emotions. Sasan, said: “It will be strange not to come into school, that journey from my home to Victoria each day has become a real habit! However, I am excited about my future at university.” He has applied to read BSc Economics at the University of Essex, whose Department of Economics is rated in the UK top five for research excellence (2014 Research Excellence Framework).
Other sixth formers may only have been at Westminster City School since Year 12 but have found their experience very positive. Sharon said: “Starting any new school is daunting but I quickly settled in and made good friends. Since the Sixth Form is not particularly near my home, it has also given me a good experience of independence, as I manage my time and finances to commute in every day.” She is waiting to hear from the Russell Group universities of Warwick, Nottingham and Cardiff, and plans to study BSc Neuroscience.
Over the coming weeks, we will feature many of our sixth formers talking about their exciting journey towards university on our School’s website and social media channels.
While we wish all our students the best of luck with their university ambitions, we leave the final word to Minhaj, who has an offer to read Pharmacy at King’s College London. He said: “I joined in Year 7 and Westminster City School has helped me immensely over the last seven years. Staff have always encouraged me to work hard and to try my best. In fact, I am not sure that I would have considered applying for such an academically demanding course at university if Westminster City School staff had not motivated me to reach my potential.”
Over the coming months, we will start to feature many of our sixth formers talking about their exciting journey towards university on our School’s website and social media channels. Our photo, above, shows just some of these students. Please follow our Facebook and Twitter accounts to find out more!
