Hans Woyda Mathematics Competition

8 December 2023

The Hans Woyda Mathematics Competition takes place every year between 64 schools across London, organised into 16 Leagues of 4 teams. Each team consists of one Year 9, one Year 11, one Year 12 and one Year 13 student from each school. The challenge is to complete difficult Maths problems under timed conditions.

In the third round of the Hans Woyda Mathematics Competition which took place on Thursday 7 December, Westminster City School faced UCS Hampstead. For the first three sections both teams matched each other for points, as they worked on the team section (section 4), it was impossible to predict which team would come out on top. Both teams found many examples to a classic number theory problem which was to find as many integers as possible between 10 and 250 (inclusive) where the sum of digits is a factor of the number.

Westminster City School team used inductive reasoning and modular arithmetic to find 62 out of 66, which kept them in the lead. They maintained the lead through the calculator section, and after a challenging algebra and calculus section they had managed to extend that lead to a full 6 points.

Mr Okyere, Teacher of Mathematics at Westminster City School who arranged for students to participate in this Maths competition said:

"It was truly a remarkable competition and all of the four boys who participated in the competition should be immensely proud of their performance. Congratulations and well done to Hezeskias (Y13), Tejas (Y12), Andrew (Y13) and Stephen (Y9).

"Westminster City School won with 32 points, whilst UCS Hampstead received 26 points."
