Alumnus of the Month

21 January 2022

Anthony Olanipekun is our Westminster City School Alumnus of the Month. Anthony left Westminster City School in 2006 and went on to study criminology with social psychology at university. He is now CEO of a charity in Brixton.

Please tell us a little about yourself – where do you work and how did you get to this role?

I am Chief Executive of a music charity based in Brixton; we work in schools and within the community to educate and develop young people interested in music. I have always worked in the charity sector but I also run a music business which focuses on radio and events.

I used the experience gained within the music industry and charity sector to get this role.

What are some of your proudest achievements from your days at Westminster City School?

My experience at Westminster City School motivated me to achieve the very best. As a result, I successfully graduated from university with a BA Honours degree in Criminology with Social Psychology.

I am also proud that I have started my own business.

What advice would you give someone looking to follow a similar career path?

The journey isn’t always easy and there are times you might want to give up, but just keep on believing in yourself and know what you want. Seek professional advice, support and mentors so that they can guide you and keep you on a positive path.

Learn as much as you can and do not be afraid to ask questions.

How have your experiences at Westminster City School contributed to your life and successes since leaving school?

Life at Westminster City School taught me tenacity, resilience and how to stay focused.

I am grateful for teachers such as Mr Hay and Miss World who were very supportive and believed in me.

Can you describe one of your fondest memories from your time at Westminster City School?

I really enjoyed being captain of the school basketball team. Participating in this sport was one of my highlights because it made me feel free and at ease regardless of how my day was going.

What’s next?

I will continue to aspire to work with more young people, showing them that there are positive ways to be successful and live life to the fullest.

We love hearing what our alumni have been doing since leaving Westminster City School. Each month, we are inviting a member of our alumni community to share their story of life after Palace Street. If you’re an alumnus who would like to take part, or you’d like to volunteer an alumnus that you know, then please drop us an email.
