Letter from the Headteacher

21st September 2007

Dear Parents and Carers,

I would like to congratulate Year 7 on how well they have settled down to their studies and compliment them on their standard of uniform which is excellent.

Cashless Cafeteria

Unfortunately we encountered a few problems with the cards for the cashless cafeteria this September. Year 7 in particular have been affected although some boys in other year groups have also had some difficulties at lunch and break times.

In Year 7 the main issue was the cards arriving late to the school and the need for an identification number to be allocated to each student. The knock on effect was confusion with the amount of credit each child was due on their card.

I believe these issues have been addressed now and the system should be fully operational from Monday 24th September. I apologise for any inconvenience and worry this has caused.

Sixth Form

Year 12 and 13 students should have finalised their courses by now and be attending lessons as set out in their timetables. The dress code that we have adopted has been well received and it has improved the general appearance of the students. As with Year 7, this is a new era for these students and they too have made a very positive start to the year. I will keep you up to date with developments in the sixth form as they occur and if you have any queries do not hesitate to contact Mr Thompson, Assistant Headteacher, or Ms Soto, Deputy Head of Sixth Form.

Open Evening

A reminder that Open Evening is next week, Wednesday 26th September, for prospective parents and their sons in Year 6 seeking a secondary place for September 2008. This is a very important evening for the school and staff will be working hard over the coming days preparing the school for the event. There will also be a number of open mornings taking place into early October.

The school timetable will be slightly altered to reflect the late finish for staff and students who participate in the Open Evening. School will finish at lunchtime on Wednesday 26th to enable the school to be prepared for the evening – lunches will be served as usual for students. School will begin later the next day, Thursday 27th September, at 9.45am.

Rededication Service – Thursday 4 October

The school’s annual Rededication Service at St Margaret’s Church is an opportunity for the whole school community to come together and remind ourselves of the commitment we have made to the religious character of the school. All students, without exception, are required to attend the service and parents and carers are welcome to attend if they wish. The school will operate a shortened day with students being dismissed from the church at the end of the service at around 12noon. Lunch will be served back at school for those students who require it.

Performance Management – Friday 5 October

The government has introduced new performance management regulations for all teaching staff and these reviews will take place on Friday 5 October. There will be no school for students on that day.

Academic Review Day – Friday 19 October

We will be sending you a letter asking you to nominate times when you are able to attend and we will do our best to offer one of these times to you. This is a valuable opportunity for you to discuss your son’s progress and set targets for the coming year.

This is a very important day and all students are obliged to attend, in full school uniform, accompanied by a parent or carer.

Thank you to all parents and carers for your support of Westminster City School and I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months and years.

Yours sincerely,

Mr D Maloney
Headteacher
