CREST in a Day
12 December 2012
Westminster City School was one of ten Schools nationally that were selected to partake in a pilot scheme run by the British Science Association to create a new CREST Award event for pupils to complete within a School day.
Wednesday 12th December saw the Science Department run their first ever whole-day CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) Award event with pupils in Year 7.
The Award scheme is the only one of its kind for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and it is highly regarded by both the STEM community and universities. A selection of boys in Year 7 spent the day working in teams of 13 to design their own community garden. After being given their initial instructions, Teachers took a step back and project managers; Najib Salam, Joel Lewis, Jayden Fowora-Knight, Raphael Obu, Dominic Simpson-Last and Raphael Ameyinoge, took over and ensured their team’s success. Throughout the day we saw pupils take on various roles of responsibility as well as develop vital skills for school and later life, such as; team work, time management, questioning, public speaking and self-evaluation.
It was not only a fantastic opportunity for the pupils involved but the success of this initial CREST in a day Award event has led to the commencement of planning future events of this kind. Furthermore, we are looking at introducing other CREST Award levels so that all pupils at WCS will have an opportunity to take part in this fantastic Award scheme.
A huge Thank you must go to all the staff, pupils and parents for their support and enthusiasm in helping our students excel in Science.
