SCHOOL RULES FOR PUPILS IN YEARS 7 – 11
Westminster City School is committed to encouraging good behaviour in an atmosphere of mutual respect and shared values, including the commitment to support and protect all members of its community. It believes that every individual has the right to be treated fairly and with dignity and respect.
Behaviour which has the purpose or effect of violating someone else’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment will not be tolerated.
Whatever the intention of the perpetrator of such behaviour, s/he needs to be made aware of the effect of such behaviour on another person.
Examples of unacceptable behaviour include:
- Any physical contact which is unwanted
- Coercion or isolation
- Display of offensive material
- Offensive jokes
- Unwelcome remarks about a person’s dress, appearance, race, gender, sexual orientation
- Shouting at staff

GENERAL BEHAVIOUR
- We expect courtesy and consideration for others at all times.
- The school upholds its Equal Opportunities Policy. Prejudice of any kind will not be tolerated.
APPEARANCE AND DRESS
- School uniform must be worn at school, on the way to and from school, and at school functions and outings. Any exception to this rule for school outings will be specifically stated.
- Students may wear a single ear stud.
- Rings of any type, including earrings, may not be worn.
- All articles of clothing and sports equipment must be clearly marked with the owner's name.
PERSONAL POSSESSIONS
- Pupils are expected to bring pens, pencils, a ruler, student planner, books and special equipment required by subject teachers.
- Items which are not required for school use should not be brought to school, and will be confiscated.
- Valuable articles and large sums of money should not be brought to school, as the school does not accept responsibility for personal property. If, for exceptional reasons, a large amount of money is brought to school, the pupil should hand it in to the main office, at the owner's risk.
- Mobile phones may be brought to school at parents’ discretion. They must be switched off during school sessions. If they are used or seen out by staff during school sessions they will be confiscated, to be returned only to a parent.
LATENESS
- Any pupil arriving in his form room after 8.50am or 1.40pm is late and will be recorded as late.
- Pupils arriving between 8.50am and 9.15am must report to the prefect or member of staff on duty. Pupils arriving after 9.15am must report to the school office.
BEHAVIOUR IN SCHOOL
- Pupils may have access to their form rooms from 8.45 am. They are not allowed in the school building, apart from the dining hall and toilets, at break or lunch time unless attending an activity supervised by a member of staff or in bad weather. Pupils must leave the building by 4.00 pm and the playground by 4.15 pm, unless staying for an activity supervised by a member of staff.
- No food or drink may be consumed on any part of the school premises except the dining hall.
- No pupil has the right to take any object from another student, without his permission, under any circumstances.
- Everyone should keep to the left as much as possible and walk in corridors and on staircases.
- Use the fire escapes only in an emergency.
- Smoking is forbidden on school premises.
BEHAVIOUR IN THE PLAYGROUND AND FORECOURT
- Climbing on roofs, balconies and walls is forbidden.
- The forecourt and gardens are not play areas.
BEHAVIOUR OUTSIDE SCHOOL
- Pupils in Years 10 and 11 are allowed to leave school at break and lunchtime if they behave in a responsible way and return punctually. This privilege can be withdrawn without notice.
- Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 are not allowed to leave school at break or lunchtime except with the written permission of the Headteacher, Deputy Head or their Head of Learning.
- Smoking is forbidden in the neighbourhood of the school, on school trips and whenever pupils are in school uniform, e.g. on the way to and from school.
HOMEWORK
- Every pupil must carry a student planner at all times, to be produced when asked for by any member of staff. This is an essential part of the school communication system.
ADDITIONAL RULES
- Where these are necessary to enforce Heath and Safety requirements in laboratories, the Learning Resource Centre, other specialist rooms, at Games and PE facilities and on Games coaches, they are part of the school rules.
