Sixth formers undertaking science

Academic excellence

In Westminster City School's Sixth Form, we are very proud of our students’ academic success. Following A Level Results Day 2023, over a 1/3 of students have secured places at Russell Group or top 10 ranked UK Universities, and they will complete their studies in subjects ranging from Medicine to Theoretical Physics, and from Law to Geography. A record number of students will start degree courses at universities from Edinburgh to Exeter. Other students hold places on competitive and prestigious degree apprenticeships. Staff at Palace Street are immensely proud of all these students have accomplished throughout their two years especially as this was the first time having the experience of opening public examination results.

The aspirational culture within our Sixth Form encourages and inspires our students to do their best and go on to a rewarding future.

When you join our Sixth Form, you will have reached an exciting crossroads in your academic career where, for the first time, you get to choose the subjects you study. You will also enjoy a new relationship with your teachers, as you are encouraged to pursue independent research, to ask questions and to take responsibility for your own learning, in much the same way as you would at university.

Life within our Sixth Form

During the day, you will undertake lessons taught by our subject-specialist teachers, who are passionate about what they teach. Our teachers expertly craft lessons to develop your interests and our class sizes remain small.

You will have a number of private study periods during the day, where you will be in our supervised study areas, directing your own learning. This is a good preparation for future study at university. You will also have the opportunity to work with our excellent Sixth Form Student Support Officer, who is available to help you learn how to study independently more effectively.

A Levels within our Sixth Form

Our A Levels are challenging, exciting and rewarding. All can lead to fantastic university courses and amazing future careers. Our staff recently recorded short videos about the A Levels offered in our Sixth Form, so please visit our Vimeo channel to find out more.

You choose three A Levels to study in our Sixth Form, as that gives you access to the maximum teaching time available. This will be a significant change from your GCSE experience, as you focus on such a smaller number of subjects in greater depth.

Like many of our sixth formers, you may choose to do the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is worth half an A Level, alongside your A Levels. The EPQ allows you to undertake an independent project, on an academic topic of your choosing, that is relevant to your future plans. It is a rewarding experience that is highly regarded by universities and employers.
